Therapy for Teens Who Are Going Through It
Being a teenager in New York City comes with a specific kind of pressure. The academic intensity, the social dynamics, the identity questions, the family expectations, the noise of a city that never slows down. Add social media, political uncertainty, and the lingering impact of a pandemic on their developmental years, and it makes sense that so many NYC teens are struggling with anxiety, depression, and a general sense of being overwhelmed.
Kind Mind Psychology offers virtual teen therapy for adolescents ages 12 and up throughout New York City. Our clinicians are trained to work with the specific developmental, emotional, and social challenges that teenagers face, using evidence-based approaches including CBT, DBT, and IFS.
What We Help Teens With
Anxiety and excessive worry. Depression, withdrawal, and low motivation. ADHD and the academic, social, and emotional challenges it creates. Identity development, including gender and sexual identity. Family conflict. Social pressure, bullying, and peer relationship challenges. Self-esteem and body image. Self-harm and emotional coping. School stress, academic pressure, and perfectionism. Life transitions including divorce, relocation, and college preparation. Trauma from adverse childhood experiences.
Affirming Care for Every Teen
Kind Mind is a culturally affirming practice. We serve teens of all racial, ethnic, gender, and sexual identities. For LGBTQ+ teens navigating identity, coming out, or the stress of living in environments that don’t affirm who they are, we provide a space where their identity is respected and supported, not treated as the problem. For BIPOC teens dealing with racial stress, code-switching, or the burden of being one of few in their school or community, we understand those dynamics and bring them into the therapeutic conversation.
A Note for Parents
Finding a therapist for your teen can feel overwhelming, especially if your teen is resistant to the idea. Our team can talk with you about how to introduce therapy in a way that reduces pushback, and we’ll make sure you’re involved in the process at a level that respects both your teen’s privacy and your need to know they’re getting good care.
All sessions are virtual, which many teens actually prefer. They can attend from a space that already feels comfortable, and there’s no awkward car ride to a therapist’s office.
We accept Aetna, Cigna, and Northwell Direct for NYC clients. Sliding scale from $25. Visit our Insurance & Fees page.
FAQ
What age does Kind Mind see teens?
We work with adolescents ages 12 and up.
Is teen therapy confidential from parents?
Your teen’s therapist will discuss confidentiality at the start of treatment. In general, what your teen shares in session is private, with exceptions for safety concerns. We also encourage regular check-ins with parents to keep you informed of progress without violating your teen’s trust.
My teen doesn't want to go to therapy. Can you help?
This is very common. Our team can help you navigate the conversation and find an approach that reduces resistance. Many teens who are initially reluctant become engaged once they experience a therapist who actually listens and doesn’t lecture.
