Talking about sex is hard enough without having to worry about whether your therapist can handle it. If you’ve been looking for a sex therapist in New York City who is knowledgeable, direct, and genuinely unshockable, you’re in the right place.
Kind Mind Psychology is founded by Dr. Monica Johnson, PsyD, an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist. AASECT (the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists) is the gold standard credential in the field of sex therapy, requiring extensive specialized training and supervised clinical hours beyond a doctoral degree. It means Dr. Johnson has the depth of expertise to work with the full range of sexual concerns, not just the comfortable ones.
Sex therapy at Kind Mind addresses the issues that people carry in silence because they don’t know where to take them:
Low desire or mismatched desire between partners. Difficulty with arousal, orgasm, or sexual pain. Sexual anxiety and performance pressure. The impact of trauma on your sex life. Sexual identity exploration, including orientation and gender identity. Navigating desire and intimacy in LGBTQ+ relationships. Sex and intimacy within polyamorous, ENM, and kink dynamics. Porn use and compulsive sexual behavior. Reconnecting sexually after infidelity, childbirth, medical issues, or long dry spells. Negative sexual scripts, shame, and the messages you grew up with about sex.
We work with individuals and couples of all orientations, gender identities, and relationship structures. Nothing is off limits in our sessions. If it involves your sexuality and it’s causing you distress or holding you back, we can work on it.
Sex therapy is talk therapy focused on sexual concerns. You don’t undress. Nothing physical happens in session. What does happen is a direct, honest, clinically informed conversation about what’s going on in your sexual life, why it’s happening, and what to do about it.
Your therapist may draw from CBT to address performance anxiety and negative thought patterns, EMDR to process sexual trauma, DBT skills for emotional regulation around intimacy, and psychodynamic approaches to understand the relational and attachment patterns shaping your sexuality. We may also incorporate Sensate Focus exercises, which are structured touch-based practices you do at home with a partner to reduce anxiety and rebuild connection.
All sex therapy sessions are conducted virtually. You connect from the privacy of your own space, which many clients actually prefer for this work. No commute to a Manhattan office, no checking in at a front desk, no worrying about running into someone in a waiting room. Just you, your therapist, and the conversation you’ve been needing to have.
We accept Aetna, Cigna, and Northwell Direct for NYC clients. Sliding scale starts at $25 per session with our Advanced Clinical Residents, and all clinicians maintain reduced rate slots at $85 and up. For full details, visit our Insurance & Fees page.
AASECT stands for the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists. It’s the highest professional credential in the sex therapy field. Becoming AASECT certified requires a graduate degree, extensive specialized coursework in human sexuality, and a significant number of supervised clinical hours specifically focused on sex therapy. It means your therapist has training far beyond what a general therapist receives.
No. Sex therapy can be done individually or as a couple. Many of our clients come on their own to work through personal sexual concerns, and some bring a partner in later if it makes sense. There’s no requirement either way.
Sex therapy is conducted as mental health treatment and is billed the same way as any other therapy session. If your insurance covers outpatient mental health services with Kind Mind, it covers sex therapy. We accept Aetna, Cigna, and Northwell Direct for NYC clients.
Yes. Kind Mind has deep expertise in working with alternative lifestyle communities including kink, polyamory, and ethical non-monogamy. We don’t pathologize your relationship structure or require you to explain the basics. That understanding is already in the room.
