LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy in NYC

You Deserve a Therapist Who Already Gets It

New York City has no shortage of therapists who call themselves “LGBTQ+ friendly.” But there’s a difference between friendly and competent. Friendly means they won’t say anything offensive. Competent means they understand the specific clinical landscape of queer, trans, and gender-diverse life: minority stress, internalized stigma, the toll of discrimination, the complexity of coming out across different cultural contexts, and the relational dynamics that show up in LGBTQ+ partnerships and chosen families.

Kind Mind Psychology is a Black-owned, culturally affirming practice that was built with LGBTQ+ clients in mind from day one. Our clinicians don’t just affirm your identity. They understand how your identity intersects with your mental health, your relationships, your culture, and your lived experience, and they integrate that understanding into every session.

What We Help With

LGBTQ+ therapy at Kind Mind addresses the full range of concerns our queer and trans clients bring to us:

Minority stress, discrimination fatigue, and the cumulative toll of navigating a heteronormative world. Identity exploration, including sexual orientation, gender identity, and the process of coming out (at any age, in any context). Internalized homophobia, transphobia, or shame. Anxiety, depression, and the emotional weight of being on guard. Trauma related to identity, including family rejection, bullying, violence, and conversion therapy experiences. Relationship challenges in same-sex, queer, and trans partnerships, including couples therapy for LGBTQ+ relationships. Navigating polyamory, ENM, and kink as a queer person. Sex and intimacy concerns specific to LGBTQ+ experience. LGBTQ+ identity within BIPOC communities, where the intersection of racial and sexual/gender identity creates unique pressures. Family dynamics, chosen family, and the grief that can come with estrangement.

Intersectional by Design

Kind Mind is not just an LGBTQ+ affirming practice. We are a practice where racial identity, cultural context, and alternative relationship structures are all held with the same level of expertise. If you’re a queer person of color, a trans immigrant, a nonbinary person in a kink dynamic, or anyone whose identity doesn’t fit neatly into a single box, we have the clinical depth to hold all of it.

How We Work

Our clinicians use CBTDBTEMDRIFS, and psychodynamic approaches, adapted for the realities of LGBTQ+ life. We also offer sex therapy with AASECT-certified expertise and DBT skills groups that are explicitly BIPOC and LGBTQ+ affirming.

All sessions are virtual. We accept Aetna, Cigna, and Northwell Direct for NYC clients. Sliding scale from $25. Visit our Insurance & Fees page.
