We are committed to contributing to the profession through published research, clinical training, supervision, podcast education, and public scholarship.
If you are a mental health professional, graduate student, clinical supervisor, or organizational leader looking for resources on culturally responsive care, evidence-based practice, or clinical training, this page is for you.
Monica Johnson, PsyD, and Michelle L. Melton, PsyD Published by Routledge, 2021
This book provides mental health practitioners with a practical, non-pathological framework for treating race-based stress in the Black community. It calls attention to the experience of racism and chronic stress specific to Black Americans and offers clinicians tools for implementing culturally responsive treatment using multicultural and DBT techniques. Chapters include worksheets, vignettes, and case studies designed for direct clinical application.
The book urges practitioners to move beyond awareness into action: promoting societal understanding, affirmation, and appreciation of multiculturalism against the damaging effects of individual, institutional, and societal racism, prejudice, and all forms of oppression.

Monica Johnson, PsyD
An eight-lecture audiobook examining the social and psychological factors that make assertiveness difficult, the differences between passive, passive-aggressive, aggressive, and assertive communication styles, and practical strategies for setting boundaries and advocating for yourself in relationships. While written for a general audience, the content is grounded in clinical research and applicable in clinical settings when working with clients on boundary setting, interpersonal effectiveness, and relationship dynamics.

Dr. Johnson is a regular contributor to Psychology Today, where she writes on boundaries, body image, self-esteem, vicarious trauma, attachment, and the intersection of identity and mental health. Her articles are written for a general audience but draw from clinical expertise and current research.

Kind Mind Psychology provides clinical supervision and training for the next generation of mental health professionals. Dr. Johnson directly trains and supervises every clinician at the practice, with a focus on evidence-based modality competence and culturally responsive adaptation.
Individual supervision for pre-doctoral externs, postdoctoral fellows, and early-career clinicians. Supervision focuses on case conceptualization, modality-specific skill development (CBT, DBT, EMDR, IFS, CPT, PE, ACT, Schema Therapy, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy), and culturally affirming clinical practice.
Group supervision for externs and trainees at the practice, providing peer consultation and case review within a supportive, diverse clinical team.
Advanced Clinical Residency program. Kind Mind’s resident program places graduate-level clinicians in the final stages of their training within the practice, providing supervised clinical experience with a diverse client population. Residents are trained in the same evidence-based modalities as all Kind Mind clinicians and receive close supervision from our licensed psychologists. This program is central to our mission of training culturally competent clinicians and expanding access to affordable mental health care (resident sessions start at $25, making therapy accessible to clients who might otherwise go without care).
Organizational training. We provide clinical training for mental health organizations and teams on evidence-based modalities, culturally responsive care, and supervision best practices. See the Speaking & Media page for more.
If you are a graduate student or early-career clinician interested in training opportunities at Kind Mind, visit our Careers & Training page or contact us with your CV and a brief statement of interest.
If you are a clinician looking to refer a client to Kind Mind for services you don’t offer (such as DBT skills groups, sex therapy, EMDR, or executive functioning coaching), we welcome cross-referrals and are happy to coordinate care.
Our DBT skills groups in particular are open to clients receiving individual therapy at other practices. If your client would benefit from structured DBT skills training alongside the individual work you’re doing together, they can join one of our groups without transferring their individual care. Groups run three evenings per week and are available across all PSYPACT states*.
