New York is a city of complicated, beautiful, messy relationships. And most couples therapists in Manhattan treat them all the same way: two people on a couch, one set of assumptions about what a relationship should look like. That’s not how we work.
Couples therapy at Kind Mind Psychology is built for the full range of relationships people actually have. We work with married couples and long-term partners. We work with LGBTQ+ couples navigating minority stress, identity, and the specific relational challenges that come with being queer in the world. We work with interracial and intercultural couples managing the friction that different cultural backgrounds can create in a partnership. We work with polyamorous, ENM, and kink-involved partners who need a therapist that understands their relationship structure without pathologizing it. And we work with couples in crisis who aren’t sure whether to stay or go.
Whatever your relationship looks like, you don’t have to explain the basics before the real work can begin.
The issues that bring NYC couples into therapy are often variations of the same core struggles:
Communication has broken down. You’re talking past each other, fighting about the same things on repeat, or not talking at all. The silence is louder than the arguments.
Trust has been damaged. Infidelity, betrayal, broken promises, or a slow erosion of honesty that has left one or both of you questioning whether the foundation is still solid.
Intimacy has faded. Emotional distance, physical disconnection, mismatched desire, or the feeling that you’re roommates instead of partners. We work closely with our sex therapy services when sexual concerns are part of the picture.
Life transitions are testing the relationship. Moving in together, having kids, career changes, relocating, blending families, opening a relationship, or navigating illness. Transitions reveal fault lines that were easy to ignore when things were stable.
You’re not sure whether to stay. Discernment work is part of what we offer. Not every couple who comes to therapy stays together, and that’s okay. We help you make a clear, informed decision rather than an impulsive one.
Our therapists draw from multiple approaches depending on what your relationship needs:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) identifies and changes the negative thought patterns and behavioral cycles that keep conflict alive. If you’re stuck in a cycle of criticism, defensiveness, and withdrawal, CBT helps you see it and interrupt it.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) brings emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness skills into the relationship. When one or both partners struggle with intense emotions, DBT gives you tools to communicate your needs without escalating.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) works with the attachment patterns underneath your conflicts. Most recurring fights aren’t really about the dishes or the schedule. They’re about whether your partner sees you, values you, and will be there when you need them. EFT gets to that layer.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) helps each partner understand the “parts” that show up in conflict: the protector that gets defensive, the wounded part that shuts down, the critic that attacks. When both partners can see their own parts clearly, the dynamic between them shifts.
We also integrate EMDR when individual trauma is affecting the relationship, and Sensate Focus when physical intimacy needs attention.
All couples therapy sessions are virtual. Both partners can log on from the same location or separate locations, which is especially useful when schedules don’t align or one partner is traveling. No commuting across Manhattan, no coordinating a shared trip to an office. You show up from wherever works.
We accept Aetna, Cigna, and Northwell Direct for NYC clients. Sliding scale starts at $25 per session. Reduced rate slots are available at $85 and up. For full details, visit our Insurance & Fees page.
Yes. We have deep expertise in LGBTQ+ affirming therapy and work with couples across all orientations, gender identities, and relationship configurations. You won’t need to educate your therapist on what your relationship looks like.
Absolutely. Kind Mind specializes in working with alternative relationship structures including polyamory, ethical non-monogamy, and kink dynamics. Your therapist will understand the specific challenges and communication needs that come with these structures.
That’s common. One partner is often more ready than the other. We can start with the willing partner in individual sessions and invite the other partner in when they’re ready. Sometimes individual work is actually the best starting point because it helps you show up differently in the relationship.
Couples therapy can be billed through insurance when one partner is the identified client with a diagnosable condition (such as anxiety, depression, or adjustment disorder). Our team can help you understand your coverage options. We accept Aetna, Cigna, and Northwell Direct for NYC clients.
