Podcast and Media

I’ve never been the type to keep what I know inside a therapy room. Psychology should be accessible. It should be practical. And it should meet people wherever they are, whether that’s in a session, on a commute, or scrolling at 2 a.m. when they can’t sleep. That’s why I put so much energy into my podcast work, media appearances, and content creation.

Here’s where you can find me

My Podcasts

ADHD & (Current)

Hosted by Dr. Monica Johnson | Produced by Understood.org

ADHD & is my current podcast, produced in collaboration with Understood.org. Each episode explores how ADHD intersects with the things that matter most in everyday life: relationships, dating, parenting, identity, self-care, burnout, and more. If you or someone you love has ADHD, this show is designed to help you understand the emotional and relational side of it, not just the productivity tips.

Recent and notable episodes include ADHD and dating (why the spark burns bright then fades fast), surviving a breakup with ADHD, ADHD and imposter syndrome, navigating self-care with ADHD, and ADHD and parenting.

Savvy Psychologist (Former)

Formerly hosted by Dr. Monica Johnson | Macmillan / Quick and Dirty Tips

For years, I hosted the Savvy Psychologist podcast through the Quick and Dirty Tips network (Macmillan). The show brought practical, evidence-based mental health advice to a wide audience with humor, zero judgment, and actionable takeaways. Episodes covered everything from emotional regulation and boundary setting to managing anxiety, building self-esteem, navigating grief, and understanding how trauma affects the brain.

Savvy Psychologist has a deep back catalog worth exploring. If you’re looking for digestible psychology you can apply to your life right away, start here.

Guest Appearances & Interviews

Parenting Problems

I joined the Parenting Problems podcast to talk about the mental health challenges parents face, including the guilt, the burnout, and the pressure to get it all right. We got into what actually helps (and what doesn’t) when you’re parenting through stress, managing your own mental health, and trying to raise emotionally healthy kids at the same time.

ADHD Aha

I appeared on ADHD Aha to talk about those moments of realization that change how people understand themselves and their ADHD. We explored how ADHD shows up in ways people don’t always expect, especially in emotional regulation, relationships, and self-perception.

Crisis to Calm: 4 DBT Skills with Dr. Johnson

In this session, I walk through the four core DBT skill areas: mindfulness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. This is a practical breakdown of the skills we teach in our DBT groups at Kind Mind, and it’s a solid introduction if you’re curious about what DBT actually looks like in practice.

Dr. Monica Johnson Explains How to Deal with Media and Black Trauma

I sat down with Ebony to break down how implicit bias and the assumption of criminality inform law enforcement behavior and how that impacts the Black community. We discussed the trauma that Black Americans internalize from ongoing media exposure to racial violence and what people can do to protect their mental health while staying informed and engaged. I also shared a recommended reading list for adults and children coping with race-based stress.

Queen of the Night with Thorgy Thor

This was one of my favorite live events. I appeared as a featured guest alongside RuPaul’s Drag Race star Thorgy Thor for Queen of the Night at WQXR’s Greene Space in New York City. The evening brought together classical music, drag performance, comedy, and a live mental health check-in with the audience. It was campy, it was real, and it was exactly the kind of space where mental health conversations should be happening.

Books & Audio

Push Back: Assert Yourself in Relationships

I wrote and recorded Push Back: Assert Yourself in Relationships because too many people were never taught how to advocate for themselves. Over eight lectures, I cover the social and psychological factors that make assertiveness difficult, the differences between passive, passive-aggressive, aggressive, and assertive communication, how to structure your words when asking for what you need, and the role of context and nuance in interpersonal communication. If you’ve ever struggled to set a boundary or speak up for yourself in a relationship, this one’s for you.

Addressing Race-Based Stress in Therapy with Black Clients (Routledge)

I co-authored Addressing Race-Based Stress in Therapy with Black Clients: Using Multicultural and Dialectical Behavior Therapy Techniques with Dr. Michelle L. Melton. This book is written for mental health professionals and provides a practical framework for culturally responsive treatment, including worksheets, vignettes, and case studies. It addresses the experience of race-based stress in the Black community and gives clinicians tools to move beyond awareness into actual clinical competence.
